Petition #11681512

Abstract

Having faithfully served his deceased master, Captain John F. Price, for many years--"in Health, and Sickness, and in all vicisitudes"--William, alias William Yancey, asks for his freedom as authorized in Price's will. He also asks to remain in Virginia. Yancey believes that the legislature has the right to deny freedom to those who are not worthy, but argues that "limited & circumscribed" emancipation, based on merit, as in his own case, represents sound policy.
