News and Newspapers Online

Frequently-Asked Questions

How can I advertise on News and Newspapers Online?

News and Newspapers Online is a free service of The University Libraries of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. We do not currently make any space on our site available for paid advertisements, nor have we any plans to do so in the forseeable future; however, that doesn't mean that we've permanently discarded the possibility. If we do decide to solicit advertisements in future, we'll post complete information right here on the site.

Why do I get a blank list when I try to look at the newspapers for some states and countries?

In the early summer of 2004 and previously in the early autumn of 2000, we made behind-the-scenes changes to the News and Newspapers Online database in order to streamline its operation. Specifically, we changed the codes that the database and its associated scripts use to refer to states and provinces in North America and countries in other parts of the world.

This situation most often crops up when a user bookmarks the results pages for an individual state, province, territory, or country. Since the bookmarked address contains the old code for a particular country, the News and Newspapers Online database doesn't find any results for that country and returns zero results. For best results, users should add to their bookmarks only the main News and Newspapers Online page, which is located at http://library.uncg.edu/news/.

If you're interested in referring to your favourite news resources often, why not create an account and personalised list on News and Newspapers Online?

Where can I find snail mail addresses and other contact information for newspapers?

Visit your local library and speak to a reference librarian about your needs; you'll be amazed at the variety and amount of information that s/he can provide. In addition to the resources that s/he suggests, look or ask for the following resources, as well.

How can I read foreign-language newspapers in English?

Many news sources outside of English-speaking countries publish English-language editions. News and Newspapers Online always makes a note of all the languages in which news resources are available, so look for English in the Language field of each resource's description. If a resource in which you're interested doesn't publish an English-language version, you may wish to try out one of the many free, automated translation services that are available on the World-Wide Web; Altavista and Google offer such a service. Beware, however, as such automated translators can't possibly deal with all of the idiosyncracies of natural language and often return innacurate or misleading translations. There is no substitute for a good, working knowledge of a foreign language.

How many news resources does News and Newspapers Online list?

At the moment, there are exactly 3,010 active records in the News and Newspapers Online database.

How does News and Newspapers Online use the information that it collects when I create a personalised list?

News and Newspapers Online collects your name, your e-mail address, a self-selected password, a few configuration settings, the index numbers of the resources that you've placed in your list, the dates and times that you created and last accessed your account, and the address of the computer from which you last accessed your account. We maintain this information solely for the purpose of granting you access to and maintaining your personalised list and we will not rent, sell, or otherwise distribute this information to anyone except as required by law. You may delete your account at any time, thereby completely expunging your personal information from the live News and Newspapers Online database, though such information may persist in a backup copy or other form. The creation of an account on News and Newspapers Online is optional; all are free to use this site as guests. Residents of the United States who are less than thirteen years old may not create an account; users who would violate the laws of their home jurisdiction or those of the United States or those of the State of North Carolina by creating an account may not do so. We reserve the right to terminate the use of the Personalised List feature by any or all users at any time in our sole discretion and we will not be liable for any actual or consequential damages caused by such termination.

Why don't you list the newspaper in [insert here any locality].

There are several reasons why a particular news resource, including the newpaper in your hometown, may not be included in News and Newspapers Online. The most likely reasons are that the town's newspaper doesn't publish a web site, its web site doesn't meet our Criteria for Inclusion, or the sources that we use to find online news resources don't list this one. One of our primary sources of information about news sites is our users, so if you're aware of a news resource that meets our Criteria for Inclusion, please suggest it to us!
