UNCG Libraries International Visiting Librarian Program -- 2011

A SUFE Delegation, March 2011

In accepting an invitation from Rosann Bazirjian, Dean of University Libraries, in March 2011, Dr. Xiaoye Li, Director of the Shanghai University of Finance & Economics (SUFE) Library, led a SUFE Library delegation to visit the UNCG Libraries in Greensboro, North Carolina, as a part of the participation in the Conference for Entrepreneurial Librarians: from Vision to Implementation, held at the Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, March 10-11, 2011. The Conference was co-hosted by the UNCG Libraries and by Wake Forest University Library. Ms. Na Li, a librarian at the SUFE Library, was also in the delegation. Dr. Xiaoye Li gave a presentation at the Conference, “China’s Top 500 Enterprises Electronic Platform Development and Users’ Service.”

SUFE started as a commerce program back in 1917. It eventually becomes a multidisciplinary university with a focus on economics, management, law, humanities, and science (from Mr. Xiao Chen 2008 presentation). In 1996, SUFE was listed as one of the China’s top 211 key universities. In 2007, SUFE entered the list of top-ranking universities at the national level. The SUFE Library, in partnership with other units on campus, started project called the China’s Top 500 Enterprises Research Center several years ago. The Center offers training, consultancy, organizing conferences, data collections, and other services to help the researchers and students to retrieve needed information and publications related to top 500 enterprises in China. The Library took advantage of its tech-savvy staff to develop an electronic platform which collects, analyzes, and regularly updates the latest data and statistics of top 500 enterprises in China. Dr. Xiaoye Li’s presentation focused on this electronic platform and its services to the SUFE users. The presentation was well received by the audience. Some of them have business offices in Shanghai and other cities of China.

Prior to Dr. Xiaoye Li’s visit in March 2011, the UNCG Libraries hosted two cohorts of librarians from the SUFE Library in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Each cohort visited the UNCG Libraries for three months. During their visits, they conducted research projects, met with librarians and staff, contributed to the library projects, and gave presentations to library staff, LIS students and faculty. In June 2010, invited by Dr. Xiaoye Li, Rosann Bazirjian and Sha Li Zhang gave papers at the 2010 Academic Library Directors Forum hosted by the SUFE Library in Shanghai, China.

After the Conference of Entrepreneurial Librarians, the SUFE delegation also visited the Harold Schiffman Music Library, Jackson Library, and Special Collections and University Archives at the UNCG Libraries. A welcome reception was held at the Jackson Library for the delegation. Additionally, the arrangements were made by the UNCG Libraries for the delegations on library visits at the Duke University, Duke Business School, High Point University, NC State University, and Wake Forest University. The cultural tours for the delegations included Greensboro Historical Museum, Reynolda House, Old Salem, etc. The farewell dinner was hosted by Rosann Bazirjian at a traditional Chinese restaurant when the delicious dishes are authentic, according the SUFE guests.

Rosann Bazirjian and Sha Li Zhang co-chaired the Hosting Committee, with Mary Jane Conger, Kathy Crowe, Mike Crumpton, and Gerald Holmes as committee member to assist the hosting activities.
