Professor Ratana Na Lamphun, March – May 2007
Professor Ratana Na Lamphun from Chiang Mai University in Chiang Mai, Thailand visited the UNCG Libraries, March – May 2007. Professor Na Lamphun teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses at the Department of Library Science, Faculty of Humanities, Chiang Mai University. These courses include introduction to library science, cataloging of English printed materials, classification and Dewey decimal classification, literature on humanities, social sciences, and sciences and technology, technical services, archival materials and government publications, indexing and abstracting, advanced management for library and information centers, information organization, etc.
During her visit at UNCG, Professor Na Lamphun focused her research projects on university archival management and integrated cataloging system. She also observed information literacy classes; met with library staff and LIS professors; gave a presentation on Chiang Mai University and Thai cultures, and attended public events on the UNCG campus. Dr. Lee Shiflett, then Chair and Professor of the LIS Department, invited Professor Na Lamphun to participate in several LIS classes to gain first-hand experience of learning styles of American students. Ms. Betty Carter, University Archivist, introduced current archival technologies to Professor Na Lamphun. At the Cataloging Department, Professor Na Lamphun met with Mary Jane Conger, Head of Cataloging Department, and became familiar with the integrated cataloging system and resource discovery tools through hands-on experience. A presentation, “Early history of UNCG and campus ghosts” and a subsequent Historic Walking Campus Tour by Herman Trojanowski, Assistant of University Archivist, provided her with a quick overview on the campus architectural history. A tour to the North Carolina Zoo offered by Mary Jane Conger gave Professor Na Lamphun a lasting memory on North Carolina.
Upon return to her university in summer 2007, Professor Na Lamphun was able to offer two new graduate-level courses on modern archives and cataloging. She also completed a monographic publication (in Thai language) based on her research projects at the UNCG Libraries one year later.
