sidebar About the Project

The Timeline of UNCG History began as an in-house effort by University Archives & Manuscripts to map out significant historical events - from the founding of the institution in 1891 as a women's normal school designed to train teachers, to its present day status as one of the country's major research universities. The project eventually grew into an interactive web exhibit, which currently utilizes over 100 photographs and other images from the Archives' collections. By searching keywords or browsing different decades and years, you can view significant events ranging in subjects from student support efforts during the First and Second World Wars, to campus construction and changes in curriculum.

The Timeline is an ongoing project that will continue to expand, incorporating more media and historical information as it becomes available. In addition to an increased amount of historical images, some events will eventually include audio and video to enhance the experience. Eventually, a version of the Timeline will be incorporated into a larger University History Project, featuring an image database and other resources for researchers and interested individuals. If you are interested in learning more about the Timeline or University history in general, please contact University Archives in Jackson Library.
