The Science Building opened. It was named in 1960 for Mary Petty, a member of the science faculty for over 40 years.

The first American Legion Auxiliary Tar Heel Girls State was held on campus. Girls State provided rising high school seniors insight into politics and political activities through simulation of local and state governments.
