February 18 - The North Carolina General Assembly voted to establish the North Carolina State Normal & Industrial School.

Greensboro was chosen over Durham, Graham, and Thomasville as the site for the School.

The City of Greensboro gave $30,000 as an economic incentive to construct the campus on a ten-acre cornfield about one mile west of downtown Greensboro.
