<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>
<persname>Janet Muriel Mead </persname>(1923-2009) of <geogname>Sand Creek, Michigan</geogname>, joined the U.S. Navy WAVES (<corpname>Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service</corpname>) in August 1944. Following basic training at <corpname>Hunter College</corpname> in <geogname>Bronx, New York</geogname>, Mead attended radio school at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In February 1945, Mead was stationed at the <corpname>Naval Air Station Seattle</corpname> (Sand Point). She was discharged from the WAVES in August 1946, shortly after her marriage to <persname>Jack Helm</persname>.
