Carrie Gammel Radnik was born in Montrose, Arkansas, on May 14, 1919. She graduated from high school in 1937 and then entered a three-year nurse's training program at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. Radnik joined the Army Nurse Corps in May 1942 and attended basic training at Camp Livingston in Alexandria, Louisiana. One year later she was called for overseas service and transported to Australia, where she worked at the 42nd General Hospital in Brisbane. By the fall of 1943, Radnik was transferred to the 87th Station Hospital in Doba Dura, New Guinea. She remained in New Guinea until August 1944. She married Martin Radnik in November 1944 and was discharged from the service in March 1945. After raising a family, Radnik returned to nursing on a hospital ward.
