Job Description

  • Department: Access Services Department, Jackson Library
  • Hourly Pay Rate: starting pay $7.25/hr
  • Work Schedule: shifts available 7:30 am – midnight Monday – Thursday, 7:30 am – 10 pm Friday, 10 am – 10 pm Saturday, 10 am – midnight Sunday
  • Hours per week: dependent upon work study award
  • Employment Start Date: August 2012

Responsibilities:

Library Assistants begin working in the book stacks sorting, shelving and participating in other important projects. After stacks training, Library Assistants may be trained additionally to work on the Checkout Desk and/or in a departmental office. Desk workers interact with a wide variety of library users from the University and local communities. Desk duties include checking materials out and in, assisting users in locating materials, and providing assistance and service for computer and photocopier equipment. Office duties include processing and scanning materials, date entry, filing, and other light clerical duties. On the job training is provided. Business attire is not required, but closed toe shoes are.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a work study award as part of their financial aid package. Successful candidates should possess a proactive customer service philosophy, be able to work independently and on a team, follow verbal and written directions, and work with varying amounts of supervision. Accuracy, attention to detail, and dependability are required. Must be able to stand, stoop, and lift a minimum of 10 lbs. above head. Must be able to push and pull up to 40 lbs. Previous library and/or customer service experience is helpful, but not required.
