JBS welcomes articles on all aspects of the history (political, religious, ethnic, environmental, and literary), anthropology, sociology, and material culture of the Southern Backcountry. We adopt the conceptual framework of Kenneth E. Koons and Warren R. Hofstra in Beyond and Backcountry: Rural Life in the Great Valley of Virginia, 1800-1900 and apply that framework to the entire region from Chamberburg, Pennsylvania to Augusta, Georgia from the early eigtheenth-century to the present day:
The Journal co-exists in a friendly way with the on-line and print Journal of Appalachian Studies, and the two journals overlap in their coverage of eastern Kentucky, east Tennessee, and western Virginia from the post-Revolutionary period through the 1820s. The early spread of backcountry settlement into northern Alabama and the black belt also concern the Journal.
The editors envision special sections of the Journal on public history and historical preservation, historiographical conversations about the Southern Backcountry, and book chapters in progress.
Manuscripts may be submitted initially in hard copy or emailed as Word attachments.
