Annie E. Johns (1831-1889) lived in Leaksville, North Carolina, and attended Edgeworth Female Seminary in Greensboro. During the Civil War, she served as volunteer nurse and assistant matron at military hospitals in Danville, earning the honorific, "The Florence Nightingale of the South." Johns wrote magazine articles describing her experiences, poetry, and a novel, Cooleemee, A Tale of Southern Life (Leaksville, 1882).
