This scrapbook, created by Claude Zenobia Poindexter between 1902 and 1905, documents Poindexter's attendance at the State Normal and Industrial College (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro). The scrapbook is annotated throughout with handwritten notes on events surrounding commencement, as well as notes on gifts Poindexter received. The scrapbook also contains the names of the Junior Marshalls, the class yell, documentation on the Class of 1908 adoption of a weeping willow tree, and autographs from teachers and students of the State Normal and Industrial College. Other contents include newspaper clippings of the Sermon to the Class of 1905, Class Day exercises, Diplomas Given to the Class of 1905, and the Annual Banquet of the Alumnae.

The scrapbook contains a printed narrative history of Company K, which was first organized in Asheboro, NC in 1911. [Cornelia Jones scrapbook, 1916-1920]

Jones, Cornelia

1916-1920

Cornelia Jones of Rose Hill, North Carolina was a student of the North Carolina College for Women (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro), graduating in 1920 with a Bachelor degree in Music. During her time as a student, Jones was a member of the Cornelian Society, the Chorus, Y.W.C.A. Choir, and was also the Vice President of Chorus. She was described in the 1920 Pine Needles as a hard worker with a generous heart, sincere character, and great musical ability. The Cornelia Jones Scrapbook dates from 1916 to 1920. The scrapbook contains pictures, personal holiday greetings, invitations, event programs, newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, college documents, tickets, party favors, notes, signatures, and addresses from friends and classmates; and other memorabilia. Other materials include an invitation to Lindley Park during World War I, a program for the Cornelian and Dikean play, a Christmas card from Wade Brown, a reference to the Curry Chapel (1919), ephemera from the Armistice, and ephemera related to the Cornelian Literary Society, including a Cornelian reunion program.

Content is divided by month, and several months are separated by a page illustrated with art, including magazine clippings of unknown origins, drawings, and watercolor images. Also included in the scrapbook is the DAR yearbook and monthly editions of the 1943 newsletter "From Pillar to Post," containing local news, inspirational material, and humorous anecdotes produced and edited by the Men in Service Committee of the Woman's Auxiliary of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro.

The clippings also include content about women members of the military and efforts of women's organizations on the homefront, as well as campaigns by other groups. Content is divided by month, and several months are separated by a page illustrated with art, including magazine clippings of unknown origins, drawings, and watercolor images. This scrapbook includes an account of a Greensboro resident's experiences from the occupation of Casablanca (April 1943, Page 014), an article on American Indians in the military (April 1943, Page 019), the incentivising of a war bonds campaign with free plane rides (April 1943, Page 026) and by being allowed to pull a cord which would make the booth's display of Uncle Sam hit Hitler over the head with a club (April 1943, Page 021), and the announcement of Mary Nicholson's death (May 1943, Page 047). Also included is an article on a young model plane maker's creations being used by members of the military to increase familiarity with Allied and Axis plane types (June 1943. Page 064), another stating that a High Point soldier was one of the first to enter Bizerte in Tunisia (June 1943, Page 071), a third detailing the use and importance of colorful "zoot suit" uniforms by Marines (December 1943, Page 201), and a photograph and article showing the bloody and tattered Japanese flag sent home by a serviceman (December 1943, Page 204).

This scrapbook is a month by month collection of newspaper articles from 1944 collected by the Greensboro Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This volume thoroughly recognizes the achievements and tragedies of men and women in the service from the Greensboro-Triad region. Featured are announcements of rank, service, awards, deaths, weddings, births, victories, memorials and posthumous military awards. Greensboro residents will easily recognize many of the street address of these soldiers and their families. Of special note are articles declaring the successes of Major George Preddy (p. 164, an obituary for Preddy, killed on December 25th, 1944 is not in this volume). Eleanor Roosevelt’s visit to the Greensboro Canteen (pg. 150). A soldier’s encounter with actress Olivia De Havilland. Accomplishments of women in the service -- WAVES, WACS, Women’s Reserve, American Red Cross -- are greatly detailed. African American members of the military are among those who were profiled individually. The pages dividing the months of content from one another contain works of art from magazines or by hand in mediums like stencil or watercolor. Another article of interest details a school's scrap campaign using military ranks and promotions, with a young Chinese immigrant holding the highest rank (January 14, 1944; Page 014), the launching of the USS Greensboro (February 13, 1944; Page 036), an article talking about the ""family reunion"" of a mother and son in the service being posted close to one another (March 1944, Page 055), and a war bond advertisement honoring the first woman to die in the war, who was a native of Guilford County (Page 035).

This scrapbook, created by Dixie Lee Bryant between 1892 and 1938, documents Bryant’s experience as a student at the State Normal and Industrial School (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro), as well as her life after graduation. The scrapbook is annotated throughout and consists chiefly of photographs taken between 1892 and 1896. The scrapbook contains identified class photographs from 1893, 1894, 1895, and 1896; early photographs of the campus; a photograph of Teague Dormitory/House and its interior; identified photographs of classroom interiors; photographs of the “county fair” on campus; and duplicate photographs of African-American children that also appear in the Gove Collection. A gym photograph also appears, with conflicting identification information.

Edna Annette Forney attended the North Carolina State Normal and Industrial College (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro) from 1903 to 1908. The scrapbook is entitled My Commencement and was published as a blank book in New York by Dodd, Mead and Company in 1906. Edna handwrote the history of the College inside as well as details about the 1908 Commencement. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, a handwritten history of the College, various programs, autographs from teachers, autographs and comments from classmates, and a program of Commencement Exercises of 1908. The scrapbook is annotated throughout with black ink.

Frances Peden Summerell of China Grove, North Carolina, attended the North Carolina State Normal and Industrial College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) from 1913-1916. She participated in the Y.W.C.A., Athletic Association, Dramatic Club, Hockey team, Basketball team, and Tennis team. She served her class as Senior Class Vice President and graduated in 1916 with a Bachelor of Pedagogy degree. The scrapbook includes mounted or inserted cards, pictures, photographs, invitations, correspondence, valentines, clippings, booklets, receipts, and personal notes and autographs from friends and classmates, with passages inscribed to Frances Summerell. Programs include Graduating exercises, Program of Commencement exercises, Class Day exercises, and Baccalaureate sermon for 1916. The scrapbook also contains mounted artifacts, including dried flowers, ribbons, fabric scraps, and other memorabilia dated from 1913-1916. Other contents include Field Day programs and ribbons, Adelphian Society material and ephemera, material relating to the Student Government Officer elections of 1916, and materials relating to graduation.
