A black-and-white postcard image looking down College Avenue on the campus of the Normal College in Greensboro, NC. The buildings pictured are (front to back) Guilford Dormitory, the Infirmary, Students Building, and Spencer Dormitory. The inscription on the postcard reads, "College Avenue, Greensboro, N.C." College Avenue was designed in the early 1900s by landscape architect Warren Henry Manning to be the central artery of the campus. It was converted to a pedestrian mall in 2004. This twenty-two room dormitory was built in 1892 and was originally called Wooden Dormitory. It was then nicknamed “Midway” after the Chicago Exposition of 1893 and later called Guilford Dormitory. The dormitory was razed in 1935 to make room for the Alumni House. The infirmary building, the first separate structure to house the School infirmary, was built in 1895. It was located next to the Wooden/Midway/Guilford Dormitory on College Avenue and was used as an infirmary until 1912 when a larger infirmary was built on campus. After 1912, this building was used for music studios, practice rooms and offices and was called “Little Guilford.” Little Guilford was razed in 1947.

[Peabody Park]

Martin's Studio, Greensboro, NC

1949

This 1949 photograph shows a student walking across the bridge in Peabody Park. A unidentified building is visible in the background. The photograph was taken by Martin's Studio, Greensboro, NC. Peabody Park was created from a tract of land located behind the original campus. Philanthropist George Foster Peabody gave the College $10,000 in 1901 and President Charles Duncan McIver earmarked half of the funds to develop an educational park. It was named in honor of his relative, George Peabody, who had also been a benefactor of schools in the South. The original plan for the park, designed by landscape architect Warren H. Manning of Boston, included five miles of graded drives and walkways. It served as a resource for natural science classes, student ceremonies, and dramatic productions, and a place for the students’ mandatory walking period. With the elimination of the mandatory walking period in the 1920s and “Park Night” in 1935, Peabody Park became neglected. It has gradually been repurposed for dormitories and academic buildings and is now a small wooded area on the northern edge of the campus.
