Biographical/Historical note: Nell Coley was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. After earning a degree from Bennett College, she moved to New York, where she met and married a principal in the Columbia, North Carolina, school system. She moved there and taught for three years. She returned to Greensboro in 1935 to teach English at Dudley High School, where she remained into the 1960s.
