Biographical/Historical note:
E. JoAnne Smart Drane was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1938, and graduated from segregated Ligon High School. In 1956, she was one of the first two African-American students to enroll at Woman's College (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro). She graduated with a degree in sociology in 1960. Drane attended graduate school at North Carolina Central University and at Duke University, and worked as a school guidance counselor in Rocky Mount and Raleigh. She later worked with Wake County Schools, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. In 1996, Drane became a trustee of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro after a long career as an educator.
