Biographical/Historical note:
Albert A. "Wilkie" Wilkinson was born February 1, 1902 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and raised in Asheville. He earned a BA from Duke University in 1927 and subsequently joined the staffs of newspapers in Asheville. He went on to become news director of the News Bureau at Duke, a position he held for eighteen years. In 1947, he was hired as the director of the News Bureau at Woman's College (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro). He retired from the university in 1967. He passed away August 2, 1970, at the age of sixty-eight. He was married to Lillie Mas Stanford and had one son, Robert Newton Wilkinson.
