Biographical/Historical note: Matthews was one of the Ku Klux Klan and Nazi party members arrested following the November 3, 1979, Death to the Klan rally in Greensboro, N.C., where five protesters were shot and killed. At the time of his arrest, he was a 24-year-old married resident pf Catawba County, N.C. Matthews was acquitted of murder charges in 1980 and of civil rights charges in 1984, but was held liable for the shootings in a 1985 civil suit filed by survivors of the victims.
