Biographical/Historical note: Franklin was one of the Ku Klux Klan and Nazi party members arrested following the November 3, 1979, Death to the Klan rally in Greensboro, N.C., where five protesters were shot and killed. At the time of his arrest, Clinton was a 33-year-old married furniture upholsterer living in Newton, N.C. The Greensboro Record reported that he joined the Klan at the urging of his wife to fight interracial marriages and illegal drugs. Franklin was tried and acquitted for murder in 1980. He was also a defendant in the 1985 civil suit by survivors of the victims, but was not held liable.
