This transcript of a September 25, 1974, oral history interview conducted by William Chafe with Warren Ashby primarily documents Ashby’s membership in the Fellowship of Southern Churchmen and thoughts on race relations in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Ashby talks about his childhood and moving to Chapel Hill for a professorship. He discusses the Fellowship of Southern Churchmen; civil rights activities in Chapel Hill and throughout the South; the Cone family in Greensboro; liberal churches; leaders in Greensboro’s black community; interracial meetings at the YWCA; and school desegregation and the Pearsall Plan.
