The Baldwin School: Yesterday and Today

The Baldwin School, Yesterday and Today

Interviews

Eleanor Wonce
Clip 6—Miss Baldwin and the Station Wagon

JA: Now did all the children live around each other? Did they all live kind of within walking distance of the school?

EW: Yes. And Miss Baldwin used to have a old green station wagon. And she would pick--what she would do with the older boys early in the morning, you would see Miss Baldwin out throwing newspapers. She would make boys--she would make you work for your living. She didn’t believe in laziness. And the older boys she would pick up and they would throw newspapers out.
And she would pick children up for the school in that station wagon. It used to be packed. Now the law will pull you aside, now. But you couldn’t see nothing but heads, and she’d be carrying children to school. Bring the children up there to her school. And tell the parents don’t worry about that tuition. You bring that child along.
