Clip 3—About the Community
JA: So how did you--do you remember how the community looked at Miss Baldwin? Did they--was she known outside of the Seventh Day Adventist Community?
EW: Of course, that’s what it was, a community. That’s what Miss Baldwin said. She looked around and there was nothing for the blacks in the community. And so she let you know you didn’t have to be--half of these kids are not Seventh Day Adventist. These kids are--she, she didn’t believe that you had to belong to the church. Only thing, she wanted you to get Jesus first. And become decent citizens, that’s what she would say. Be--contribute to your community. And that’s how she was able to do it.
Half of these children wouldn’t, didn’t go to the church. It was community time. She was a community. And you could talk now and all you have to say is, “Miss Baldwin,” and the whole community know her.
