Clip 9—Growing up during segregation
JD: I asked you about growing up as a Seventh Day Adventist in High Point, but what was it like to grow up during this time just as segregation was ending? What was, what was the mood like in High Point?
JC: I wasn’t aware of it, I wasn’t aware of any of it. Nope, I wasn’t aware of any movement or anything like that because, I don’t know, I guess I was naïve. [laughs] I really was. We didn’t see, we didn’t see color because she didn’t teach that, you know. She taught love and that’s what we depict--it was love, we didn’t see segregation and all of that, you know. We didn’t. And that was during, like you said, that was during the critical time, right in there. But we didn’t, wasn’t moved by it.
