Interviews

Clip 3—Tuition

JD: When you went to the Baldwin school, was it free?

JC: No.

JD: Was there--there was a cost?

JC: Oh yeah, there was costs, yeah.

JD: Do you remember--

JC: No, I don't know how much it was. All I know is I had to wash dishes. [laughs] I cleaned up the stuff when people would eat. But no, family-wise, I don't know financially how much my mama paid. But one thing I liked about it, it included a meal, a good meal. And I do mean a good meal.
And Miss Rosetta paid for our milk when the milkman would come. She paid for our milk. And anything else we needed we had to do chores, like bring in some coal or bring in some wood, you know. And that’s how we paid for our milk. But the food was free.
