Committee Activities, Fall 2007
The Committee met three times during the fall semester of 2007 and organized a Faculty Forum focusing on copyrights and authorship rights.  The Forum was entitled "Taking Control of Your Scholarship: New Trends in Copyright, Patents and Publishing" and was held on Wednesday afternoon, November 14. The featured speakers were Skip Capone (University Counsel), Jerry McGuire (Director of Technology Transfer), and Tim Bucknall (Assistant Director for Information Technologies and Electronic Resources). Prior to the Fall 2007 Faculty Forum, the Committee distributed brochures related to
Author Rights, Copyright Addenda, Open Access, and Create Change to all faculty members on campus (approximately 800 individuals), and the mailing was accompanied by a letter from the Provost and the Dean of Libraries encouraging faculty to attend the forum and become more informed about the issues of scholarly communication.

Committee Activities, Spring 2008
The Committee also met three times during the spring semester of 2008, continuing its efforts with a more ambitious program. The Committee arranged for David E. Shulenburger, Vice President for Academic Affairs for the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) to present a Faculty Forum entitled, "Open Access to Scholarship: Benefits for the Scholar, University and Society." The program was scheduled for Thursday, February 28, 2008, from 10:30am to Noon in the Alexander Room of the Elliot University Center. Immediately following the program, the Committee also sponsored a box lunch (Noon to 1:30pm) for interested faculty to continue a discussion of the issues--with 45 minutes set aside for lunch and disscussions at each round table and the final 45 minutes set aside for general comments and questions for Dr. Shulenburger.

Committee Annual Report for 2007-2008
The Committee filed its Annual Report for 2007-08 with the Faculty Senate at the end of the spring semester.

Committee Activities, 2008-2009
In September, the Committee co-sponsored a Faculty Forum that featured John Unsworth, the former Chair of the American Council of Learned Societies’ Commission on Cyberinfrastructure for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and he spoke to the faculty about the greatly expanded opportunities for digital scholarship, especially those allowing new research questions and new connections.

The Committee’s primary focus during the year, however, was the launching of UNCG’s Institutional Repository, NC DOCKS.   The Committee worked with the Libraries to promote the repository and to inform faculty about the benefits of posting works in NC DOCKS.  In addition, each faculty member on the Committee agreed to archive his/her works in NC DOCKS.
