Review of Chapter Three: Computer Searching

Now review what you've learned about computer searching..

1) Libraries use containers of digital data called databases to store information. A database is an organized collection of data that can be searched and retrieved.

2) You should choose your keywords carefully, and then combine them into search statements using search connectors.

3) The two most important connectors are AND and OR. These are the connectors you will use most often in your searches.

4) You use the connector AND to indicate that both search terms are required. Each result of the search must contain both terms.

5) You use the connector OR to indicate that only one of the search terms is required. Each result of the search may contain either one term or the other or both.

6) The search connector AND narrows the search and produces more specific results. The search connector OR broadens the search and produces less specific results

7) When you use AND and OR in the same search, you should enclose the terms connected by OR in parentheses.
