What's the difference?

Each citation style has its own rules. Before you start writing your citations, you need to know what the rules for your chosen style are. Jackson Library has developed some style guides that summarize the most important rules of each style:

APA Guidelines (Will open in a new window)

MLA Guidelines (Will open in a new window)

Turabian Guidelines (Will open in a new window)

Each style is also covered in extensive detail in the following publications:

APA: Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. 5th ed. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, 2001.

Chicago: The Chicago Manual of Style. 15th ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2003.

MLA: Gibaldi, Joseph. MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 6th ed. New York: Modern Language Association of America, 2003.

Turabian: Turabian, Kate L. A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. 6th ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996.

All of these books are kept at the Reference Department of Jackson Library (just ask at the desk!). Several copies are also on Reserve.

At this point, we want to look more closely at these Citation Styles. And rather than overwhelm you with all of them, we're going to give you a choice of one to learn.

Choose:

APA            OR            MLA
