In the Reference Room, located on
the first floor of Jackson Library, you will find encyclopedias, directories,
almanacs and many other reference materials, as well as computer workstations
with internet access and librarians who are eager to help you with your research.
Room Map
Since most reference materials are not read cover to cover but are consulted only briefly, perhaps by several persons a day, reference materials do not circulate. Photocopying is available in the building and users have access to most reference materials during all hours that the Library is open.
Jackson Library is a 70% depository for United States government materials and a 100% depository for North Carolina materials. In addition, we also house microform collections of British Parliamentary materials, including Hansard and Sessional Papers. The core Government Information collection is located in the Reference Department. Assistance in locating materials from the both the core collection and the stacks is available at the Reference Desk
Indexes and abstracts are subject and/or author guides that may be used to find articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers. Most indexes and abstracts are available electronically, though a few are available in print. Reference librarians can help you select the best indexes or abstracts for your topic.
Telephone books for most North Carolina cities, the fifty largest U.S. cities, and a few foreign cities are available in paper copy. Microfiche copies for U.S. cities with a population greater than 70,000 are also available.
Our vertical files consist of two collections. The North Carolina Vertical File contains newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and historical material about Greensboro and North Carolina. These materials do not circulate. The Corporate Annual Reports include selected reports from North Carolina, National and International companies. An online subject index of the Corporate Annual Reports and the subject areas in the NCVF is available.
The Map Room contains sixteen thousand maps. Major holdings include: U.S. Geological Survey topographical maps of North Carolina counties, and current maps of all states and major U.S. cities. Assistance in using these maps is available at the Reference Desk
