Countries

World Factbook (Central Intelligence Agency)
Current statistics on countries of the world. Information about the geography (including a map), people, economy, government, defense, communications, environment, health, and transportation of most countries in the world. The same information is also arranged in 125 subject categories.

Europa World
Provides lengthy descriptions of countries and international organizations as well as multinational comparative statistics. For each country there is a discussion of
recent political and economic affairs, a statistical survey subdivided by subject, and a directory covering government and politics, society and media, and business and commerce. This online version of the print Europa World Year Book is restricted to the UNCG community.

Country Briefings-The Economist
Very useful reference collection of 60 country profiles that emphasize economic and political issues. Includes information on economic structure, political structure, forecasts and statistics, market updates, and more. Links to recent news reports about issues affecting the economy.

Background Notes (U.S. State Department)
Similar in scope to Country Briefings but with more narrative.

International Government Information
Jackson Library's Government Documents Division website with links to information on embassies, the United Nations, foreign governments, statistics, organizations, and more.

Library of Congress Country Studies
Historical and socio-cultural analyses of 85 countries. Very detailed but also often quite dated.

Stateline.org

Flags and Maps

Flags and Maps of the World
National flags and maps for countries of the world. Provided by the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County.

World Flag Database
There are over 260 pages on countries and international organizations. Each page contains basic information on the country, including its formal name, capital city, area, population, currency, languages, and religions. The flags include the national and state flags, ensigns, and sub-national flags. Where countries have changed their flags in the last few years the old flag is also shown.

Perry-Castaņeda Library Map Collection
The University of Texas' extensive online collection of worldwide political and physical maps, many from the Central Intelligence Agency. It offers links to hundreds of other sites with country, state, city, historical and outline maps.

David Rumsey Map Collection
The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection has over 10,000 maps online. The collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America maps and other cartographic materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented. Collection categories include antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, pocket, wall, childrens and manuscript maps.

Map Collections: 1500-2004
The Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress holds more than 4.5 million items, of which Map Collections represents only a small fraction, those that have been converted to digital form.
The focus is Americana and Cartographic Treasures of the Library of Congress. Map Collections is organized according to seven major categories: cities and towns, conservation and environment, discovery and exploration, cultural landscapes, military battles and campaigns, transportation and communication, and general.

TopoZone
TopoZone has worked with the US Geological Survey to create the web's first interactive topographic map of the entire United States.
They offer digital topographic maps, aerial photographs, and related mapping information to the professional and outdoor recreation communities.
