Vertical Files: North Carolina Collection
The North Carolina Collection can be searched by using either the "Search for items" command or by selecting from the alpha list using the first letter of the person's last name.

Fulltext Sources

Biography Resource Center
Current and historical full text biographies from Gale Group sources. Biography Resource Center also includes full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals. Search for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death year, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender. Includes Marquis Who's Who. American National Biography
Provides full-text biographical information on deceased figures from American history who have lived since 1450. Each entry contains a bibliography which includes citations for primary sources. More info (Off-campus use restricted to UNCG community)

Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford)
Provides full-text biographical information on deceased figures from the UK and the British Commonwealth who have lived since the 4th century BC. Each entry contains a bibliography which includes citations for primary sources, as well as the location of any archives, existing likenesses, and, in some cases, wealth at death. Biography.com
Although slanted toward "personalities" rather than major historical figures, there are many of the latter as well. (Eg., Mahatma and Indira Gandhi). A commercial site, it is very "busy", but can provide useful biographies ranging from a paragraph to two pages.

New York Times Historical

Provides full text of the newspaper from 1851 to three years ago. May include obituaries and feature articles.  More info on New York Times Historical

Specialized Biography Sites

Authors
From Homer and Herodotus to Martin Amis and Seamus Heaney, this site provides leads to Internet resources on over 1900 writers of all time periods. Even Voltaire has over 80 references. (Includes links to Amazon to buy works by the authors.)

United States Presidents
A site developed by C-Span providing details of all American presidents. Includes film and audio clips.

Internet Movie Database
Provides brief biographical information on people in the movies: actors, directors, writers, etc.  Extensive filmographies are included.

Distinguished Women
A commercial site which links to thousands of sites dealing with famous women, from Sakajawea and Summer Saunders to Josephine Baker and Hypatia of Alexandria. (Avoid the links to books for sale at Amazon.com.)

Supreme Court Justices
A project of Northwestern University, this rich site contains much biographical information, as well as links to audio clips of oral argument and texts of decisions.

Women's Legal History Biography Project
This Stanford University site provides information designed to "extend the historiography of women as lawyers in the United States."  Includes photos, obituaries, and suggestions for further biographical research.

American Generals
This Historycentral.com site includes bios of Revolutionary and Civil War leaders, as well as links to presidents and first ladies. It also includes their idiosyncratic list of the "500 Most Important People of the 20th Century".

First Ladies
A project of the National First Ladies' Library in Ohio, this site provides biographical information and links to print biographies, bibliographies of articles and other resources.

Scientists (National Academy of Sciences)

Hundreds of profiles of distinguished scientists such as John Dewey, Margaret Mead, Thomas Edison, and Louis Agassiz. Continuously updated.

Biologists
A selective list of biologists from Pasteur to Darwin and many others. Produced by the BIOSIS organization.

American Inventors
Created by the National Inventors Hall of Fame, this site provides brief to substantial information on inductees, including patent numbers of important inventions.

E-books

U*X*L Encyclopedia of World Biography
ten volume set, 2003
Features 750 biographies of notable historic and current figures from around the world. Entries focus on the people most often studied in middle and high school. Highlights include photos and illustrations; a chronology; a glossary; sidebars covering facts of interest; and indexes by nationality, ethnicity, occupation, and general terms.
