Objectives for Library Instruction:
Graduate Students

Graduate students who have not achieved the objectives of library instruction for undergraduate students should use the library’s web tutorials designed for this purpose. In addition, they are encouraged to make an appointment with a reference librarian to seek individual assistance.

  1. Graduate students will understand how research materials are disseminated in their discipline and recognize how that knowledge can help determine the direction of his/her search for specific information.
    1. Graduate students will understand that researchers in their field may combine information from research sources (literature review) with original thought for their own research and/or analysis to produce new information.
    2. Graduate Students will understand the process through which information sources are accepted and disseminated in their discipline.

  2. Graduate students will understand the importance of the organizational content, bibliographic structure, function, and use of information sources.
    1. Graduate students will understand the importance of evaluating the author’s credentials or the corporate group responsible for providing the information (professional associations in the discipline, etc.)
    2. Graduate students will be able to identify unique features of the most important reference sources in their discipline.
    3. Graduate students will understand the scope (subject parameters, types of materials, dates of coverage, etc) of the most important reference sources in their discipline.

  3. Graduate students will be able to identify useful information from information sources or information systems.
    1. Graduate students will be able to develop more sophisticated search strategies using Boolean searching and other in-depth levels of searching.
    2. Graduate students will understand the benefits and limitations of both print materials and electronic materials.

  4. Graduate students will understand the way collections of information sources are organized and accessed.
    1. Graduate students will be able to identify the broad Library of Congress classifications for their discipline.
    2. Graduate students will understand the value of archival materials in their discipline, if appropriate.
    3. Graduate students will be able to search the catalogs of other libraries.
    4. Graduate students will be able to request materials not owned by UNCG by using interlibrary loan or document delivery.
    5. Graduate students will understand that they are encouraged to make an appointment with a reference librarian to discuss individual research needs
