Information for Faculty

Because many students have had little experience doing research, they may feel intimidated about using libraries. Both print and electronic resources can be complex and confusing. Jackson Library's Research Skills Instruction Program is here to help your students learn their way around library resources and develop the research skills they will need to succeed!

Instruction Sessions

The most effective way to reach your students is by designing a library research assignment or research paper and then scheduling a Library Skills Instruction session a few weeks before the date the assignment is due.  Instruction sessions usually consist of presentations to classes in the library's electronic classroom (the Electronic CITI) or other classroom facilities.  Students gain hands-on experience while learning basic research strategy using the most important research sources.

An instructional session may not answer all of the students' questions, but it provides them with a starting point to begin research on their own.  Students will also be more aware of what librarians do and will feel more comfortable asking for assistance.  Instruction sessions are tailored for each class and differ depending upon the level of the academic course.
