Introduction to SuDoc Classification
Written for student-shelvers.

Formats of Gov Docs in Jackson Library:

• paper
• microform (single sheets of plastic) [about the microforms in the library]
• online (web sites and a few databases)
• microprint & microcards (probably never used)

Finding paper or microform gov docs:

1. Analyze the call number – what type is it? Does it look like an LC call number or does it look far stranger?

2. If US or NC, see what year (1980s starts mostly fiche.)

3. Try to find it!

• If 1990's or even more recent, check agency publications online.
• If 1980's, try fiche first, if not found, try paper.
• If older than 1980, try paper first, if not found, try fiche.
• If still not found, look in the shelflist/card catalog by Susan’s office for possible directions under card with the same call number.
• Also check holding shelves by the elevator for items to be shelved/reshelved.
• Finally, if still not found, report it to Susan, as it may be one of the items dumped into our catalog by the Marcive Tape Load which the GPO never sent. Susan will remove such from the catalog.

4. If it’s classed fiche, it has an LC call number and does not say document. These are located in the 9 narrow metal cabinets by the closed stacks fence area -- see the colored map by the stairs.

5. If it’s microcard, it will be in the 1 cabinet, which stands alone near the microfiche and microcard readers, which are very near by the classed fiche -- see the colored map. There is no way to print from microcard/print readers. Only Davis Library at UNC-Chapel Hilll, as far as I know, can make print-outs from microcards or microprint.

6. If it’s microprint, it’s on the second floor in the film room in tall red boxes, organized by LC call number.
