General Graduate School Guides

General guides provide an introduction to the graduate programs available in a particular discipline or at a particular university. More detailed information about many areas is available in the discipline-specific guides.
Peterson's Guides. Princeton, NJ: Peterson's. Annual.
This six-volume set contains information on almost 34,000 graduate programs in the U.S. and Canada. The first volume has an overview and the remaining volumes are broken down by discipline. Most program descriptions are brief, but there are some comprehensive, full-page sections (paid for by the institutions) which contain detailed information. Online access

The web site's directory contains both free listings of programs and links paid for by the schools offering the program. Free listings contain basic descriptions and contact information of the offering. Paying advertisers receive a more in-depth description and a link directly to their site so students may further explore the program.

College Catalogs

The college catalog collection on microfiche is located in the Microforms Room on  second floor Main. It provides access to copies of catalogs for both graduate and undergraduate programs at institutions in the United States from 1976 to 1997.  The Reference Department also maintains a collection of more recent college catalogs from selected colleges in North Carolina. College catalogs for foreign universities with UNCG affiliations are shelved in the Reserves area.
