For your cultural paper this semester, you'll need to find at least one recent (past five years) nursing research article about a cultural group such as Appalachian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Afghan, or Hispanic. Obviously you'll be most interested in finding research articles that address patient care, health practices, or other topics related to your assigned culture.
You will also need to find two additional sources, such as peer reviewed artices (from any journal, any publication date) OR sources pre-approved by your instructor.
Most instructors have pre-approved this text: Transcultural nursing : assessment and intervention. By Joyce N. Giger. Call number RT86.54 .T73. On reserve at Jackson Library.
CINAHL Guide to articles published in nursing and allied health journals from 1937-present. Library subscription, use your Novell (eSpartan, Blackboard) user name and password to log in from off campus. Truncation symbol *
Start by searching ALL recent nursing journals for sources on your culture. Once you know which articles are being written about your group, you can choose a topic based on one of those articles.
Results
Do you have TOO MANY results? Add another keyword to your search: hispanic AND communication. The word AND reduces your results to items that mention both of your keywords.
Do you have TOO FEW results? Try different ways of phrasing or spelling your topic: hispanic OR mexican american OR latino. The word OR increases your results to items that mention EITHER of your keywords.
Want to combine AND and OR? Put parentheses around the the OR terms: (hispanic OR mexican american OR latino) AND communication.
Scan a few citations (article title and publication information) to identify a result that you can use. Need a little more info? Hit the hyperlinked title to look at the detailed description of the article for

Search tips for cultures:
PsycInfo - Guide to psychology articles, even includes some mental health nursing journals. Does have a peer reviewed journal limit.
Tips for those researching cultural phenomena described in Giger and Davidhizar's Transcultural Model:
Communication is a good keyword for the communication category. Try both CINAHL and PsycInfo.
Environmental control: PsycInfo is a good place to search. Try the term locus of control.
Space: PsycInfo is a good place to search for keywords such as personal space, personal distance, interpersonal distance, proximity, etc.
Time: You can try general keywords such a time perspective, future-oriented, past-oriented, etc., but you will be slightly more likely to find a source by reviewing the Giger text (next suggestion).
All other topics from the transcultural model: Review the Giger text on your population (available during the library instruction session and on Reserve at the library checkout desk). Most instructors allow you to use this text directly as a source. You can also search for articles about nursing implications described by Giger in the chapter on your cultural group. For instance, some populations have are uncomfortable with being in close proximity with strangers or with those of the opposite sex. This may lead women from some cultures to avoid preventive health services such as pap smears or cervical cancer screenings. If you're truly stumped, look at the journal articles referenced at the end of the chapter on your cultural group or your topic (time, space, etc.).
