If you aren't sure which department link to choose, think about what department
on campus might cover material in your subject area.
Tips:
- When searching your topic try a variety of subject headings for the same
concept.

- Depending on your topic you may want to include some of the biology databases

- The nursing and health journals may not have enough information for some
health topics. Try Medline for more complete coverage of medicine,

Search
- Citation index to over a thousand of the world's leading arts and humanities
journals including many of the core anthropology journals
- Covers articles, bibliographies, editorials, letters, reviews, and more.
- The citation database will find references cited by the authors of the journal
articles, i.e. the footnotes
- Cited reference search: search for articles that have cited a previously
published work

Web of Science
(Social Sciences Citation Index, Science Citation Index)
- Indexes thousands of peer-reviewed science and social science journals cover-to-cover
- Indexes articles, bibliographies, book reviews, editorials, letters, meeting
abstracts, notes, review papers, reviews of software, and more.
- The citation database will find references cited by the authors of the journal
articles, i.e. the footnotes
- Cited reference search: search for articles that have cited a previously
published work
- Covers 1956 to date.
Lexis-Nexis
Academic
- Full text articles from thousands of journals, magazines, transcripts of
radio and television news broadcasts, newspapers, editorials, newsletters,
and other sources
- Especially good for short articles on current issues and for newspaper articles
on issues and programs relevant to a particular geographic area.
- Useful for information on geographic issues covered by local, regional,
and foreign newspapers
- Dates of coverage vary by publication

- The "Legal Research" section includes legal news, law review articles,
state and federal case law, state and federal statutory law (e.g. North Carolina
General Statutes), and federal regulations (from government agencies).

- Subjects: agricultural economics, geography, home economics, human nutrition,
food science, rural sociology, deforestation, water quality
- Citations refer to journals, government reports, books, manuscripts, dissertations,
etc.
- Dates of coverage: 1970 to present
JSTOR
- Full text for several hundred scholarly journals including about two dozen
anthropology and archaeology journals.
- Covers journals concerned with world regional studies, population studies,
ecology, sociology, geography, and public policy
- Coverage begins with volume 1 but does not include the last 3-5 years for
any title
- Search by subject or browse by title and contents.
Humanities
and Social Science Retrospective
- Predecessor of Social Sciences Index and the Humanities Index.
- Indexes the core scholarly anthropology journals published between 1907
and 1984
- Citations only, no full text
Medline
- Index to articles from leading medical and life sciences journals as compiled
by the National Library of Medicine
- Subjects: medicine, biology, microbiology, environmental health, nutrition,
public health, etc.
- Citations only, no full text
Family &
Society Studies Worldwide
- Citations and abstracts (no full text) from professional journals, books,
popular literature, conference papers, and government reports.
- Research, policy and practice literature in the fields of family science,
human ecology and human development.
- Considerable Australian material. Limited number of indexed materials available
in Jackson Library.
- Covers 1970 to present.
Finding Individual Journal Articles Using "Journal Finder"
- Use Journal Finder to locate the text of an article accessible through The University Libraries. The article may be online, in print, or in both formats
- Link to Journal Finder
- Enter the journal name (not the article title) such as Human Organization
in the title box and press the Enter key or click Search
- If the title appears, click on the icon for the method of access you want
- Click on the computer icon to find full text online access to
some articles
- The database(s) and dates for full text are displayed
- Choose a database and follow any instructions for finding specific
journal titles
- Click on the book icon to locate print issues of the journal in the
Library
- The record shown will provide the holdings and location of the journal
- Older years of journals are either bound and shelved by call number
with the book collection in the stacks or are on microfilm arranged
by film number in the microforms area on 2nd
Floor Main
- Current issues are available on the Jackson Study Lounge shelves
on 1st Floor Main
- Click on the envelope icon for mail or electronic delivery of
the article

Government Information
Government agencies, especially federal agencies, publish significant
amounts of information and statistics on a wide variety of topics. International,
state, and local information can be harder to find on the Internet but it is
worth a try.

on such topics as aging, children and families, labor, health, agriculture,
census data, and the environment.
