This site is dedicated to the hard-working volunteers of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) - a resource partner with the Small Business Administration, providing assistance to small businesses through direct counseling, email counseling, and workshops. Check out their many success stories and then find the SCORE office nearest you.

Local, Area and Regional Resources

Small Business Development in Greensboro is a resource from the Greensboro Area Chamber of Commerce, and a necessary stop for anyone desiring to start a small business in this area. Links are provided to most relevant regulation and licensing authorities, but also include a Business Planning Checklist, the very important Greensboro Venture Capital Fund, a good source of local small business loans, and a very thorough Resources for New Businesses. Business and legal Local Requirements of the county, state and federal governments are also listed. The Chamber's Forward Guilford Economic Development Partnership has a useful package of local information and statistics, and a list of available real estate for prospective businesses. A Membership Directory, with a Business Category list, is also available.

The Greensboro Public Library Business site has loads of useful links and information for small business in the Triad.

Action Greensboro is a non-profit agency created to coordinate follow-up activities to the several "McKinsey" reports, to study the economic prospects for the future of Greensboro. Among other services and task forces, it maintains a Economic Development page with links to Entrepreneur organizations.

The Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship (formally the Greensboro Business Center) is a "small business incubator", according to the mission of this non-profit institution. "The incubator is designed to support non-retail, new or emerging businesses in the service and light manufacturing arena. The Center provides modestly priced office and light manufacturing space along with shared support Services, such as business counseling, receptionist, copier, fax, post office boxes, word processing, etc." Over 100 small businesses have utilized the services of this center since 1988.

Downtown Greensboro Inc. - The mission of Downtown Greensboro Inc. is to direct a comprehensive economic development program to strengthen downtown Greensboro economically, culturally, and in every other manner which will enhance this area as the center of the Triad.

GTCC Business and Industry Services/Small Business Center - For those desiring either help or educational opportunities in the small business area, the GTCC Small Business Center provides seminars, workshops, courses, counseling, a resource library and referrals to other sources of help for owners and potential owners of small businesses. Click on "Small Business Center" near the top of the site to see courses currently being offered. Many of their seminars are FREE.

The Greater Greensboro Merchants Association provides a number of useful links, including its Membership Directory, an Event Calendar, and a list of informative Workplace Workshops. The GGMA is a "cost-effective business resource organization focused on supporting the whole company with unique growth-oriented programs and services."

Piedmont Triad Entrepreneurial Network is intended to be a resource for entrepreneurs and fast-growing businesses in the Piedmont Triad. Small business entrepreneurs can join and take advantage of assistance and educational programs. A highly useful resources site with links to all manner of area resources, chambers of commerce, etc.

High Point Economic Development Corporation - Similar in purpose to several of the Greensboro sites, above, in promoting High Point as a dynamic and rapidly growing place to locate a business. Help in finding local real estate and and a lots of information about High Point and Guilford County, as well as many other useful links.

The High Point Chamber of Commerce, like it's Greensboro counterpart, provides a great deal of business service and support, including a searchable and categorically arranged Directory, but no separate small business section.

The High Point Public Library maintains a very useful Small Business site, with many excellent subdivisions, including a "Small Businesses" section.

Winston-Salem Small Business Assistance - The small business assistance and recruiting arm of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, which, like the Greensboro and High Point sites, will provide a variety of services in either starting or locating a business in that city, including a useful Directory of member businesses by Category.

The Forsyth County Public Library maintains a useful Business Science department, with both Web and other resources.

The Angell Center for Entrepreneurship of the Babcock School of Management of Wake Forest University, provides some services for small businesses, including the Demon Incubator. The incubator offers office space and Internet access for growing businesses. It houses three to five start-up businesses, with tenants admitted on a rolling basis throughout the year. Each business that enters the incubator has approximately 12 months to grow and find a permanent location.

The Council for Entrepreneurial Development is a Research Triangle Park entity primarily designed to stimulate high impact business growth in that area and the state as a whole, by providing programs and services in four major areas: education, capital formation, mentoring, and communications.


N.C. State Government Resources

North Carolina Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) - Guides to starting up a small business in North Carolina, doing business with state and local governments, finances and credit, business research studies completed by or with the agency, and much more. Excellent list of online small business Publications as well.

North Carolina @ Your Service, the official state home page, is a gateway to important information, state government agencies, and sources for business and industry. The North Carolina Serving Businesses link from this site offers 20 subject categories of business information, including Business Permits, Business License, Safety, Occupational Licenses, Taxes and Insurance, a highly useful Business Start-Up site (with an excellent "Financing" section), and an Expansion and Relocation site.

North Carolina Business Information - Corporate names database, business license office, lobbyists, agriculture information, and much more.

The North Carolina District Office of the Small Business Administration (below) maintains many useful links, including a detailed Startup Kit and a very useful Financing site, with links to preferred lenders and loan programs.

The Commerce Finance Center of the North Carolina Department of Commerce is a good source of the "...financing alternatives available in North Carolina" to small and relocating businesses. Also useful is their William S. Lee Quality Jobs & Business Expansion Act site, which encourages hiring within the North Carolina work force, and provides Tax Credit Guidelines for doing so.

The North Carolina Department of Revenue's NC DOR Business site, with instructions and forms for business owners in North Carolina.

The Small Business Center Network of the North Carolina Community College System, comprised of 58 Small Business Centers located at community colleges throughout North Carolina, supports the development of new businesses and the growth of existing businesses by being a community based provider of training, counseling, and resource information.

Federal Government Resources

U.S. Small Business Administration - Detailed "Startup Kit" for starting a small business, a comprehensive "Publications Room" with access to a huge number of excellent SBA publications online, financial information, small business economic indicators, online courses available through a "Small Business Training Network," and links to other related sites. A popular section of the "Startup Kit" is Finances: The Basics. The SBA also maintains an online Office of Women's Business Ownership, with a Women's Business Center directory with links to state organizations, along with other very helpful information. The most frequent question concerning the SBA and small business development relates to small business LOANS! The SBA maintains a Business Loans site which will answer many of these questions, as well as a library of business loans FORMS.

WomenBiz.Gov is the gateway for women-owned businesses which wish to sell products and/or services to the federal government.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provide services to small businesses, and to disadvantaged and women-owned small businesses with respect to doing business with HUD, at HUD Small Businesses.

The IRS Small Business/Self-Employed site and their Starting A Business site both have useful tax information for the small business owner. Click on "Quick Links" for a list of, and links to, most of their services.

General, Commercial, Legal and Other Resources

Yahoo Small Business Information is Yahoo's very comprehensive small business site, with links to hundreds of useful web sites, as well as category links to such subjects as Business Opportunities, Business Plans, Consulting, Credit, Employee Disabilities and Employment Law, Financing, Software, Business Magazines (many of which offer some free issues and articles), and related web directories, to name just a few. Also a link to their Yahoo! Small Business for news, business solutions and other resources.

American Small Business Alliance - Major national lobbying organization for small business.

Open, American Express' Small BusinessNetwork - Information window with startup manuals and information on taxes, franchising, hiring, marketing and much more.

The Austin Family Business Program at Oregon State University is a great place for small, family businesses to keep in touch, get good ideas concerning how best to operate, study how other family businesses have been successful, and generally foster the success of small, family businesses. An excellent Resources and Tools site, lots of success stories and examples, with profiles of particular businesses, and a free registration site to better keep in touch. An excellent resource for the small, family business!

ACE-Net, the "Angel Capital Electronic Network", attempts, "... to allow individual accredited investors, SBICs and institutional venture capitalists to find small, growing companies through a secure Internet database, and to provide ongoing training and research to enhance the business skills of entrepreneurs and small investors." Companies must enroll and pay a fee in order to take advantage of the securities service and be listed for potential investors.

The Planning Resource Center from Bplans.com - a great variety of startup information with plans for all stages of starting and running a business, including marketing plans and how to develop a successful business web site.

Quicken Small Business Guide - Information on startup, legal issues, taxes, business plan templates, and much more.

Idea Cafe's Small Business Channel - Lots of up-to-date ideas and information on starting and operating a small business, lots of examples of success stories in small business, and the opportunity to post your own ideas or ask for help.

About.com's Small Business Website - Information on starting up, plans, e-commerce, current articles, and issues.

EntreWorld from the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership - Lots of guides on starting and developing a small business, how to manage growth, and where to find supportive information.

Franchise.com is THE site for finding an appropriate franchise business. Links by categories and alphabetical by company..

Superpages.com's BigBook - Yellow pages for business - one of a number of searchable and browseable business databases for addresses and phone numbers of all kinds of businesses.

Hoover's Online Business Network - Information about tens of thousands of businesses in the U.S., along with up-to-date market information, business directories and initial public offering information. "Capsule" information and essential "Financial" data on every business in this database is free.

The 'Lectric Law Library FORMS ROOM - lots of free legal forms for your business, under Business and General Forms.

FindLaw's Business Center has articles, guides, sample contracts, business plans and much more. See in particular "The Upstart Small Business Legal Guide" , and Small Business Forms, which contains a large number of business legal forms, most of which are free.
