Current Periodicals are unbound issues of serial items including magazines, journals, newsletters, and newspapers that are received by the Library on a regular basis. They are shelved in the Jackson Library Reading Room on shelves open to the public. Magazines, journals, and newsletters are shelved alphabetically by title on shelving located in the middle of the room; newspapers, on separate shelving located in the rear of the Reading Room. Newspapers are shelved in one alphabet by title of name of the city of publication if domestic; by title of the paper if foreign.
Current Periodicals may be used anywhere inside the Library; they are not available to be checkout out for use outside of the Library. Empty shelves labeled "Please leave issues to reshelve here" are provided on each aisle as return shelves.
The length of time that issues of particular titles remain on the shelves in the Reading Room differ from title to title. Less recent issues of magazines, journals, and newsletters could be bound into book form and shelved by call number in the Stacks or Storage, or could be available on Microfilm. You will need the call number and floor location to find these items. Music Periodicals are located in the Music Library. Issues may be unavailable for periods of 2-3 weeks while being bound. Newspapers are retained for 2-6 months depending upon receipt of microfilm to replace the issues or specified lengths of time if title is not received on microfilm..
To determine if the Library owns a periodical title in print and where particular issues are located, look up the periodical title in the Library Catalog or Journal Finder. ( If using Journal Finder, choose the "Print" icon which links back to the catalog.) By comparing the date, volume and issue number you want to the listings under "Holdings", you can where the issues are shelved. When searching in the Library Catalog, you can check to see if full text online issues exist by clicking the "Journal Finder: (Find all methods of accessing this title)" link. In Journal Finder, choose the "Online" icon.
