UNCG Students, Faculty and Staff - Borrowing from Other Academic Libraries

UNCG students, faculty and staff whose library accounts are in good standing are eligible to participate in cooperative and referral borrowing programs and interlibrary loan services.  These agreements allow for students, faculty, and staff from each institution to borrow in person from the other institutions, as a complement to Interlibrary Loan, when they have limited time to obtain the needed items and have transportation to the other libraries.  Those who participate are subject to the policies of the lending libraries.

Be aware that while the main libraries at these schools participate in these agreements, not every library at each school participates; however, the various libraries may share a catalog.  Before traveling to another library, we suggest that you follow these steps:

  1. Check the catalog of the library from which you wish to borrow for availability of the items needed and library hours. Two useful tools for checking availability are our Catalogs of Other Libraries website and WorldCat.
  2. Contact us to inquire about the status of your account and your eligibility.
  3. Call the library from which you want to borrow to verify your eligibility to gain access to what you seek.

The University Libraries participates in reciprocal borrowing agreements for students, faculty, and staff through the UNC system and TALA; and for faculty only through the OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program.  Information regarding how to borrow through these agreements appears below.

Letters of referral to borrow materials from other libraries in the area, including the Greensboro Public Library, may be available at the Jackson Library Access Services Desk.  Please inquire at the Desk as to whether or not the library from which you want to borrow participates.
Interlibrary Loan will retrieve material from other libraries and resources for UNCG students, faculty and staff.

How UNCG Students, Faculty, and Staff May Borrow from Other UNC System and TALA Schools

The UNC system consists of the following Universities:   Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina School of the Arts, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Asheville, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Western Carolina University, Winston Salem State University.

TALA (Triad Academic Library Association) consists of the libraries at Alamance Community College, Bennett College, Elon University, Forsyth Technical Community College, Greensboro College, Guilford College, Guilford Technical Community College, High Point University, North Carolina A & T State University, Salem Academy and College, Wake Forest University, and Winston Salem State University.

Currently enrolled UNCG students and currently employed UNCG faculty and staff whose library accounts are in good standing can borrow from the other UNC system and TALA libraries directly.  Borrowing directly requires your UNCG FirstCard picture ID and the first four digits of your UNC-Genie Pin number.

Each library may have its own procedures as to how they validate eligibility and their own restrictions on what materials can be borrowed.  You will have to register at each library from which you borrow and may have to update your registration each semester that you borrow.  Individuals who participate in this program are subject to the policies of the lending institutions and are responsible for returning items to the libraries from which they were borrowed.

To borrow, take your FirstCard and pin number to the main library of the campus of your choice.  At that circulation desk, tell the staff that you are a UNCG student, faculty, or staff and want to borrow materials.

They will ask you to validate that you are currently enrolled or employed and that your library account is in good standing by asking you to log in to our Renew Items/Your Library Account website and showing them your account, which UNC system libraries may access directly or through the UNC Borrower Authentication site, or they may telephone the Jackson Library Access Services Desk.  Once they have verified your standing, they will guide you through their registration process after which you will be able to borrow.

How UNCG Faculty May Borrow through the OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program

The OCLC Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program is an agreement among more than 150 participating OCLC academic research libraries meeting specific measurable requirements which enables faculty of each of these institutions to borrow materials at the libraries of all, using a single card issued by the instructor’s home library.  Individuals who participate in this program are subject to the policies of the lending institutions and are responsible for returning items to the libraries from which they were borrowed.
UNCG faculty wishing to use this program should apply for an OCLC card at the Access Services Desk in Jackson Library.  A brief registration form will need to be filled out before the card can be issued.  Cards are issued on an academic year basis expiring each academic year at the end of August.  Once the card is issued, the faculty member can take the card, along with picture ID, to any of the participating institutions where they will be required to register for borrowing privileges at that institution.  (Note:  if you are traveling or stationed outside of Greensboro and need this service, please call the Access Services Desk.  We will attempt to arrange privileges for you via telephone.)
