UNCG students, faculty and staff should present a current UNCG FirstCard ID to borrow material. Anyone registered at UNCG in the current term for any credit course and who is eligible to obtain a UNCG FirstCard ID is considered a UNCG student.
All other borrowers should present a photo ID and any UNCG library borrowers card issued.
ID cards used for borrowing are not transferable. Only the owner of the ID may borrow on his or her account.
UNCG faculty can authorize other employees to borrow books and journals on their accounts by filling out an Authorization to Borrow Books/Journals for UNCG Faculty form and sending it to the Access Services Desk. These forms are kept on file through their expiration dates. The authorized borrower must present their picture ID; the borrowed items will be check out on the account of the authorizing faculty member.
UNCG students, faculty and staff whose library accounts are in good standing are eligible to participate in cooperative borrowing programs and interlibrary loan services. Those who participate in cooperative borrowing are subject to the policies of the lending institutions. Before traveling to another library, we suggest checking their library catalog for availability of the items needed and library hours. Two usefuls tools for checking availability are the Catalogs of Other Libraries website and WorldCat.
Currently enrolled or employed UNCG students, faculty, and staff whose library accounts are in good standing can borrow from the other UNC system campus libraries directly or through Interlibrary Loan. To borrow directly requires your UNCG FirstCard picture ID and the first four digits of your UNC-Genie Pin number. Each library may have its own procedures as to how they validate eligibility and their own restrictions on what materials can be borrowered. You will have to register at each library from which you borrow and may have to update your registration each semester that you borrow.
To borrow, take your FirstCard and pin number to the main library of the campus of your choice. At that circulation desk, tell the staff that you are a UNCG student, faculty, or staff and want to borrow materials. They will ask you to validate that you are currently enrolled or employed and that your library account is in good standing by asking you to log in to our Renew Items/Your Library Account website and showing them your account, which they may access directly or through the UNC Borrower Authentication site, or they may telephone the Jackson Library Access Services Desk. Once they have verified your standing, they will guide you through their registration process after which you will be able to borrow.
Note: Anyone who wishes to borrow from North Carolina Central University's library must first come to the Access Services desk at Jackson Library to receive a Co-op Card. The Co-op card and a photo ID will be required in order to check out books there.
UNCG faculty members can borrow from other participating OCLC libraries. Contact the Access Services Desk for details.
In addition to the UNC system campus libraries, currently enrolled or employed UNCG students, faculty and staff whose library accounts are in good standing can borrow from the Elon University Law School library and libraries participating in the Triad Academic Library Association (TALA). These libraries include: Alamance Community College, Bennett College, Elon University, Forsyth Technical Community College, Greensboro College, Guilford College, Guilford Technical Community College, High Point University, Salem Academy and College, and Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University. Each library may have its own procedures as to how they validate eligibility and their own restrictions on what materials can be borrowed.

Interlibrary Loan will retrieve material from other libraries and resources for UNCG students, faculty and staff.
Students, faculty and staff from other University of North Carolina system campuses with library accounts in good standing may borrow from the University Libraries by participating in the UNC System Reciprocal Borrowing Program. Interested patrons should bring their school issued picture ID, ID number and/or school PIN number, to register at the Jackson Library Access Services desk. Note: Borrowers from North Carolina Central University must obtain a Co-op Card from their library before coming to Jackson Library to borrow.
Guilford County high school students should inquire with their school librarian about referral letters to Jackson Library.
Public school teachers in Guilford County may apply for a Jackson Library Borrower's Card by presenting school or photo ID and proof of employment for the current academic year. We will also accept a letter of referral from their Media Center librarian.
Members of the UNCG Friends of the Library may borrow books by presenting a photo ID and a valid Friends of the Library card. A Friends of the Library membership card may be obtained for $25 from the Jackson Library Administrative Offices, which are open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information, you may call the Administrative Offices at (336) 334-5880. Friends of the Library may renew books online twice by accessing Renew Items/My Account.
Alumni and other University friends may apply for borrowing privileges with a valid letter issued by the Office of Advancement Services, phone # (336) 334-5988.
Permanent residents of Greensboro who do not fit into other categories above and need specialized material unavailable through the services of the Greensboro Public Library may apply for a written referral from the main branch of the Greensboro Public Library to borrow materials from the University Libraries on a one-time basis. The referral is limited to two items and must include exact titles.
Visiting scholars and individuals engaged in study or research not affiliated with an institution with a UNCG borrowing agreement may apply to the Head of Access Services for possible borrowing privileges.
Nurses who precept UNCG students may apply for borrowing privileges. Current preceptor status must be verified. Contact the Library Liaison to the School of Nursing for more details.
