<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>
<persname>Evelyn E. Horton</persname> of <geogname>Eastondale, Massachusetts,</geogname> was a member of the WAC [Women's Army Corps] during <subject>World War II.</subject> She joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in July 1942 and enlisted in the WAC when it was established in 1943. She was stationed at <geogname>Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia,</geogname> then transferred to <geogname>Camp Pickett, Virginia.</geogname> She was sent overseas and was stationed in <geogname>Cairo, Egypt,</geogname> with the <subject>Middle East Service Command</subject> from May 1944 through 1945.

<head>Collection Overview</head>
<p>The collection consists of <genreform>correspondence</genreform>, <genreform>military papers</genreform>,  <genreform>photographs</genreform>, and <genreform>writings</genreform> by Evelyn Horton.  Most of the correspondence is written by Evelyn to her parents back home in Massachusetts.  However, there are a few letters from WAC friends and one letter from her brother.  The photographs include pictures from before Evelyn joined the WAC; photographs of her in uniform at Camp Pickett, Virginia; Evelyn costumed as <emph render="doublequote">Miss Liberty</emph> for the U.S. Army musical revue <title render="italic">Sandsations of 1944</title>; other photographs from her military days; and of her wedding.  The writings folder contains poems written by Evelyn and accounts of some of her travels while she was stationed overseas with the military.
