WOMEN VETERANS HISTORICAL COLLECTION

Jamie Marshall Papers, 1943-1945
#WV-0206

  • Name: Marshall, Jamie D.
  • Branch: Army Nurse Corps
  • Served: 1943-1945
CONTENTS: Correspondence, ration coupons

ACQUISITION: Purchased from a collector, March 2001

DESCRIPTION: There is an interesting twist to this collection in that the wife, Jamie Marshall, goes to war, while the husband, Henry, who is over the age limit, stays home. This collection consists of letters written between Jamie and her husband, beginning with her stay at Camp Bowie, and following her to England, France, Belgium and Germany. Jamie's letters are very detailed with information about everyday life working as an army nurse during the war, discussing food, uniforms, living quarters, work, and leisure time activities, but they are also full of emotion as well as fact. Jamie discusses the fatigue of working long hours, her relationship with the patients, being uncomfortable and having to do without, the anxiety of waiting for both orders and leave, and getting lonely for her husband and home. She also discusses in great detail the items she needs Henry to send her, such as underwear, shoes, books, and various feminine toiletries.
