WOMEN VETERANS HISTORICAL COLLECTION

Marie Cody Papers, 1937-1959
#WV-0157

  • Name: Cody, Marie
  • Branch: WAVES
  • Served: WWII
CONTENTS: Correspondence, newsletter and newspaper clippings

ACQUISITION: Purchased from a collector, February 2000

DESCRIPTION: This collection consists of letters written to and newspaper clippings saved by Donald M. Downey, from 1937 to 1959. However, the bulk of the collection consists of a group of letters written to Donald by Marie Cody, Yeoman 1st Class, in 1945 and 1946. At that time Donald was in pilot's training in Texas, and Marie was stationed in Washington, D.C. but later writes from California. Marie had been engaged to Donald's brother Larry, a MIA pilot. These letters trace the path of Marie getting over Larry and falling in love with Donald, even though the two didn't meet until almost the end of their correspondence. Although most of her letters discuss the new relationship with Donald, she also addresses some other subjects, among them: her hope of finding Larry alive; desire to transfer to Alaska or Hawaii; decision to marry or not; past and present suitors; return of POWs; Roosevelt's death; VE Day; and entertainment and leisure activities while working in Washington.
