<head>Historical Note</head>
<p>The Department of Accounting of the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business and Economics was initially established in 1972, following the reorganization of the school. However, this establishment was in name only, as the actual formation of the department was delayed pending faculty growth and financial support. In 1976, Stanley Kratchman was named the acting head of the Department of Accounting while a search began for a permanent candidate. After a three year search, Dr. Charles Mecimore was appointed the first permanent department head in 1979. </p>

<p>One of Mecimore's first challenges was to create a new master's degree program, which was authorized by the UNC Board of Governors in 1979.  After numerous course proposals, modeled after other accounting programs at various universities, the UNC Board of Governors gave the final approval for the establishment of a Master of Science Degree in Accounting in January 1984. In the fall of 1984, 21 students enrolled in to the graduate program, and a chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the national accounting honorary fraternity, was installed on the UNCG campus.</p>

<p>In 1987, the Department of Accounting conducted a self-study report of its programs in order to seek accreditation with the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). In February 1988, a committee from the AACSB visited the Department. After discussing with the visitation team their specific concerns and problems, the Department of Accounting withdrew their request for accounting accreditation. </p>

<p>In 1989,  Dr. William A. Collins was named to head the department.</p>

<p>In 1996, the Department of Accounting again began the process of working towards accreditation, and in 1997 conducted a self-evaluation report to be submitted to AACSB. In November 2001, the AACSB accreditation team visited the Department of Accounting, and in April 2002 granted full accrediation to the department. </p>

<p>In 1997, the Department of Accounting, in connection with the Internal Revenue Service, established a Student Tax Clinic whereby graduate students assisted low and moderate income taxpayers undergoing audit by the IRS. The clinic was the only one of its kind offered in North Carolina, and it ran until 2002.</p>

<p>In 1998, Susan E. Anderson was named head of the Department of Accounting. She was replaced by Dr. Edward Arrington in 2002.</p>

<p>This collection contains the official records that reflect the functions and activities of the Department of Accounting of the Joseph M. Bryan School of Business at UNCG from 1975 to 2002.  These records contain materials related to faculty meetings, committees, annual reports, and other general topics including affirmative action, fraternal organizations, degree programs and scholarships.  The files primarily include correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, emails, reports, and handbooks.</p>
