Why Visit?
Our materials are non-circulating. This means they can only be used in our reading room during our department's hours of operation. This rule applies to all researchers, including University faculty and staff.
Some information about our collections is available through online finding aids (search here) or the library catalog, but not everything is available on the Web. You can always contact staff with reference questions, and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Sometimes you can find all the information you need remotely, but other times you will need to visit us in person.
To save time, you may want to call or e-mail ahead of time to schedule your visit. This way we can retrieve materials and put them on hold for you. However, all researchers are welcome with or without an appointment anytime during business hours.
Hours
We are open:
Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
Jackson Library is closed on holidays. Click here for a listing of those times.
Directions
For driving directions to Jackson Library, please go here. Information on parking can be found on the University's Parking Operations & Campus Access Management Web site.
You can enter Jackson Library through the main entrance facing College Avenue, or the Elliott Center Connector if you are approaching from the direction of Aycock Street. Our reading room is located on the second floor of the library's main building. To reach this area, take the main stairwell near the front entrance, or use the elevator located off the main lobby. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the Circulation or Reference desks, and someone will point you in the right direction.
Requesting and Handling Materials
When you walk in the door of our reading room, you'll be greeted by a little *beep*, which will let one of our staff members know to come assist you. Once again, it is recommended that you try to find what you need using our web site and the library's online catalog before visiting in person, in order to make your research more efficient. Please feel free to contact us remotely if you have any questions.
A stationary computer terminal with internet access is available in the Reading Room if you need to access any of our online resources while on site. Wireless access is also available for patrons with laptop computers. Once you decide what materials you are interested in, you will be asked to fill out a call slip in order for one of our staff members to retrieve materials. All research using University Archives & Manuscripts materials is limited to the Reading Room, as our materials are non-circulating.
We ask that you stow away any materials aside from paper, pencils, and/or a laptop computer. No food or drink is allowed while you are reviewing the materials. Please be respectful of the materials, as some items may be fragile or require special handling. Furthermore, we ask that you not mark or manipulate the materials in any way, and that you keep them in the order we have established. Finally, it is important to note that our Reading Room is a secure area. Once you are finished with your research and have returned the materials - or should you need to leave for any other reason - please ask a staff member and they will release the lock on the door.
