Back by popular demand, Chinese art and artifacts from University Archives & Manuscripts' Tuttle Collection will be on display in the Jackson Library's 1st floor lobby across from the Reference desk. The exhibit will run from December 7 through September 30, 2008, and will include original text, photographs, and a variety of art items.
While Tuttle's artifacts have appeared on previous occasions, the exhibit has been revised to provide more insight into the context of the art procured during the tumultuous period of Miss Tuttle's stay in China. Tuttle graduated from the State Normal and Industrial College (now UNCG) in 1900, and went on to do graduate course work in English at Columbia University. Eventually, Tuttle joined a mission to China, where she taught English at schools in Shanghai and Soochow between 1910 and 1942. Tuttle collected a variety of items during her stay, including porcelain table wares, ivory carvings, and bronze vessels.
An EAD finding aid is available online for the Tuttle Collection.
