<head>Descriptive Summary</head>

<abstract label="Abstract" encodinganalog="545">George Dickieson of Winson-Salem, North Carolinac was hired as an instructor at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNCG) in 1938 and retired after thirty-nine years in 1979.  While at UNCG as a professor and conductor, he greatly influenced the School of Music to better develop the School and it's programs to acheive national recognition and offer the best possible education for budding musicians.  Mr. Dickieson also conducted the College-Community Orchestra which later became the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.
Anna B. Dickieson was a student at The Woman's College of the University of North Carolina and graduated in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music as a voice major.

<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>George Dickieson of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Music from Salem College attended the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music earning a Master of Music degree, both in violin performance. He was hired by the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNCG) in Greensboro, North Carolina from 1938 until 1979. In the beginning of his career at the Woman's College he served as concert master of the faculty string quartet, as a violin instructor and developer of the college's instrumental program.  While there, he established the Summer String Institute for young people and a Summer String Institute Orchestra for college-age students.  In 1951 he became conductor of the College-Community Orchestra which eventually became the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.  Under his instruction the Symphony achieved membership in the American Symphony Orchestra League.  As part of the University he taught violin, conducting and orchestration. George ushered in graduate level courses, Chamber Music and Symphonic Literature as well as organizing the Sinfonia, a student orchestra.   He was a member and officer of Pi Kappa Lamba, the founder and first president of the NC Chapter of the American String Teachers Assocation, was elected to the Golden Chain Honorary Leadership Society and was honored by the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.  In the community he was a member and officer of the Chamber Music Society and signed the charter of the Greensboro United Arts Council.  He contributed to the national profile of the School by writing music periodicals and articles for periodicals such as <title render="italic">Violins and Violinists</title>, participating in seminars and judging contests.  He died at age 92 on May 23, 2004.</p>

<p>Anna Bell Dickieson attended the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music in 1943. She was a member of the Dikean Society and her freshman year she was a member of Choir, Glee Club, Playlikers, Town Students Organization.  Her sophomore year she was  a member of Playlikers, Town Students Organization, Corresponding Secretary, in Choir Education Club, Glee Club and in the  Junior Dance Group.  Her junior year she was a marshal, in Choir, Glee Club, Music Education Club, Town Students Organization,  a Librarian, Young Composers Club, Social Committee Dance Group, Modern Dance Group, and Corresponding Secretary.  Her senior year she was a member of Choir, Glee Club, Modern Dance Group, Publicity Chairman, Music Education Club, Town Students Organization, Social Committee Dance Group,  and Corresponding Secretary.   She married George B. Dickieson on March 23, 1946.
