<abstract label="Abstract" encodinganalog="545">Mary Winifred Bushakra moved with her Lebanese husband to his native country in the 1930s; at the suggestion of her friends, she published an account of her experiences there entitled I Married an Arab. </abstract>

<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p><persname>Mary Winifred Bushakra</persname> met her future husband, a native of <geogname>Lebanon</geogname>, in 1923 while studying at the University of Seville in Spain. They both returned to New York after their studies, where they married and lived for 12 years. In 1937 she left her home and a successful career to accompany her husband to Lebanon where she spent the remainder of her life. She and her husband built their home, "Eagle's Eyrie," on an isolated mountaintop. At the suggestion and with the encouragement of her friend Ruth Richardson, Mrs. Bushakra published an account of her experiences in <title render="italic">I Married an Arab</title>, New York : Day Co., 1951.

Written from her home in Lebanon, they describe her life there and cover a wide variety of topics including living conditions, politics, <subject>women's rights</subject>, the weather and family news.</p>
<p>Two items are paragraphs only, clipped from letters, containing information about the marriage of her daughter and the birth of her grandchild and describing the Druse religion, a sect of <subject>Islam</subject> of which her husband Fouad was a member. </p>
