Biographical Note

Mary Winifred Bushakra met her future husband, a native of Lebanon, in 1923 while studying at the University of Seville in Spain. They both returned to New York after their studies, where they married and lived for 12 years. In 1937 she left her home and a successful career to accompany her husband to Lebanon where she spent the remainder of her life. She and her husband built their home, "Eagle's Eyrie," on an isolated mountaintop. At the suggestion and with the encouragement of her friend Ruth Richardson, Mrs. Bushakra published an account of her experiences in I Married an Arab, New York : Day Co., 1951.

The letters are from the author to her friends Ruth Richardson and Blanche Rollinson. Written from her home in Lebanon, they describe her life there and cover a wide variety of topics including living conditions, politics, women's rights, the weather and family news.

Two items are paragraphs only, clipped from letters, containing information about the marriage of her daughter and the birth of her grandchild and describing the Druse religion, a sect of Islam of which her husband Fouad was a member.
