<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>
<persname normal="Burgwyn, Mebane">Mebane Holoman Burgwyn</persname> <date>(1914-1992)</date> was an award-winning <occupation>author</occupation> of <subject>children's books</subject>. She was born in <geogname>Rich Square, North Carolina</geogname>; graduated from <geogname>Woman’s College</geogname> (now the <geogname>University of North Carolina at Greensboro</geogname>) in 1935 with a bachelor's degree in primary education; and secured a master's degree in guidance and counseling from <corpname>East Carolina University</corpname> in 1961. Burgwyn lived with her family on a farm near <geogname>Jackson, North Carolina</geogname>, where she worked as Director of Guidance Services for <corpname>Northampton County Schools</corpname>. She was the author of seven books for young people, many of them about the experiences of <subject>farm life</subject>. She received the <corpname>American Association of University Women</corpname> award for the best juvenile book of the year in 1952 for <title render="italic">Penny Rose</title> and again in 1970 for <title render="italic">The Crackajack Pony</title>. Other books written by Burgwyn are: <title render="italic">River Treasure</title>, <title render="italic">True Love for Jenny</title>, <title render="italic">Hunters’ Hideaway</title>, <title render="italic">Lucky Michief</title> and <title render="italic">Moonflower</title>.
