<p>The gift of this manuscript was announced at the first Friends of the Library dinner meeting in April, 1959. Virginia Terrell Lathrop was a friend of the author, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Trustee of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. Lathrop wrote an article about Olive Tilford Dargan which appeared in North Carolina Libraries, vol. 18, no. 3, Spring 1960.</p></note>

<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>
<persname normal="Tilford, Olive">Olive Tilford</persname> <date>(1869-1968)</date> was born on a farm in <geogname>Kentucky</geogname>. She was educated at the <corpname>University of Nashville</corpname> and <corpname>Radcliffe College</corpname>. She taught in Arkansas, Missouri, Texas and Canada before moving to the southern United States for health reasons. In 1898 she married <persname normal="Dargan, Pegram">Pegram Dargan</persname> of South Carolina. Tilford published a number of novels, dramas, and books of poetry. In 1916 she received the <subject>Southern Society of New York</subject> prize for the best book by a Southern writer, and in 1925 she was awarded the <subject>Belmont-Ward Fugitive Prize</subject>. Two novels published under the pseudonym <persname>Fielding Burke</persname> describe labor conditions in North Carolina <subject>mill towns</subject>. Dargan received an honorary degree in Literature from the <corpname>University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill</corpname> in 1925.
