Gift of Olive Tilford Dargan per the request of Virginia Terrell Lathrop in 1959.

The gift of this manuscript was announced at the first Friends of the Library dinner meeting in April, 1959. Virginia Terrell Lathrop was a friend of the author, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Trustee of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. Lathrop wrote an article about Olive Tilford Dargan which appeared in North Carolina Libraries, vol. 18, no. 3, Spring 1960.

Biographical Note

Olive Tilford (1869-1968) was born on a farm in Kentucky. She was educated at the University of Nashville and Radcliffe College. She taught in Arkansas, Missouri, Texas and Canada before moving to the southern United States for health reasons. In 1898 she married Pegram Dargan of South Carolina. Tilford published a number of novels, dramas, and books of poetry. In 1916 she received the Southern Society of New York prize for the best book by a Southern writer, and in 1925 she was awarded the Belmont-Ward Fugitive Prize. Two novels published under the pseudonym Fielding Burke describe labor conditions in North Carolina mill towns. Dargan received an honorary degree in Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1925.

This manuscript is of a book of poems, The Spotted Hawk (Winston-Salem: John Fries Blair, 1958). The work represents Dargan’s return to poetry after writing novels for many years.
